The works are part of an on-going research project Home, carried, which is focusing on difficult pasts, personal and collective power, and the role of monuments within contemporary society. Being originally from Estonia, a country still dealing with its numerous ideologically charged Soviet-era and imperial Russian monuments and architectural structures. These sites carry complex historical, political, and emotional layers, engaging with how such loaded pasts continue to shape the present and how they might be contextualised through artistic and spacial practices.
Influenced by Alamaa’s family history under Soviet repression, the research addresses the lingering effects of political oppression. Growing up in Estonia, a country shaped by repeated occupations, Alamaa has observed how unresolved historical injustices fuel contemporary conflicts. The often-silenced histories of the Baltic States and Eastern Europe serve as a foundation for analyzing broader geopoliticalstruggles and the present day normalization of violence.
